Maui Humane Society is a beautiful, open air animal shelter for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, and other animals in need of safe shelter. We are the island’s only open-admission animal shelter, providing veterinary and routine care and helping surrendered animals find a new home. We also provide humane law enforcement services, humane education and outreach, and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. As a Full-Time Veterinary Assistant at Maui Humane Society, your role under the supervision of the Vet Dept Manager and dedicated veterinarians is vital to the health and well-being of the animals in our care. You will assist with routine health examinations, provide proper restraint and handling of animals, and play an essential part in preparing for surgeries. Your expertise will extend to administering daily treatments, observing animal progress, and collaborating with veterinary technicians during procedures. This onsite position demands emotional resilience, strong organizational skills, and a passion for animal welfare, as you work closely with a dedicated team.

You'll be integral to maintaining a clean and professional environment, ensuring the well-being of every animal while representing the values of compassion and integrity that define Maui Humane Society.

To thrive as a Full-Time Veterinary Assistant at Maui Humane Society, a blend of practical skills and a compassionate mindset is essential. Candidates should possess experience in handling animals, particularly dogs and cats, along with a solid foundation in public relations and customer service. A high school diploma or GED is required, and a commitment to the organization's mission is paramount. Familiarity with basic computer skills will aid in managing records accurately.

A general understanding of pet behavior and care is crucial, as is the ability to work with a diverse array of animals, including those with special needs. A positive attitude and a humane approach are must-haves, ensuring every animal receives love and concern. Additional qualifications, such as veterinary-related experience or training from a veterinary assistant program, as well as exposure to shelter medicine or spay/neuter initiatives, will significantly enhance your contributions to our team.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

Qualification Requirements:

  • Experience with the handling of animals, particularly dogs and cats.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be able to hold/restrain animals of all sizes.
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Must be willing to support the mission of the Maui Humane Society.
  • Must treat all animals humanely with love and concern both on and off the job.
  • Must adhere to all local laws regarding personally owned animals

Additional Qualifications that would benefit this position:

  • Veterinary related experience or veterinary assistant school.
  • Previous experience and/or exposure to shelter medicine or spay and neuter programs.
