Seeking dedicated Zoo Animal Keepers to provide exceptional care and support for our mammals, birds and reptiles at the Honolulu Zoo . These full-time permanent positions are responsible for performing routine duties related to the daily care, feeding, and maintenance of animal habitats within the zoological park. What You’ll Do Clean and disinfect assigned animal enclosures, habitats, and surrounding areas, including removing manure, refuse, and controlling pests and rodents. Maintain and landscape areas in and around animal enclosures, operating and maintaining tools, equipment, and vehicles safely, and transporting animal-related supplies within and outside zoo facilities. Prepare and distribute prescribed diets and supplements, and monitor animal food consumption for abnormalities. Observe and report animal behavior, health conditions, and unusual enclosure situations to supervisors while maintaining accurate daily and health records. Assist veterinarians and senior staff in treating, caring for, and rehabilitating sick, injured, or orphaned animals, and supporting animal enrichment and training programs. Maintain and repair animal exhibits, enclosures, and related facilities, and inspect conditions to ensure safety and compliance with standards. Perform other related duties as required. Special Work Requirements The Honolulu Zoo is a 7 days a week operation (Sunday through Saturday). Hours may vary based on operational needs. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. May be assigned to work different areas. Experience Required Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care of zoo animals. Qualification for Zoo Animal Keeper I positions will depend on your work experience and the type(s) of zoo animals you have worked with. To qualify for a specific specialty area, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care, propagation, and public display of zoo animals belonging to the specific area. Knowledge of the methods of caring, feeding, and watering a wide variety of zoo animals. Knowledge of the behavior traits of a wide variety of animals. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to keep records. Ability to apply safety precautions involved in the exhibition of zoo animals. Ability to enforce zoo regulations. Ability to detect unusual behavior or condition of animals.
