Pratt & Whitney's Mechanical Systems Design team is seeking a goal-oriented, detail-focused Principal Design Engineer who has design skills in military engine bearing compartments and mechanical component hardware to achieve maintainable, low-cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements to support the F135 ECU Program. The F135 Engine Core Update (ECU) Program consists of F-35 propulsion/engine modernization to meet aircraft upgraded Block-4 capability requirements.

What You Will Do:

• Lead a team of design engineers to develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals; process technical and design requirements of gas turbine engine bearing compartment hardware and mechanical components.
• Lead a team of design engineers to perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine hardware supporting the high and low rotors, including bearings, seals, castings, housings, supports, scoops, nozzles, & tanks. All design work will utilize UG-NX solid modeling and other modeling and analysis tools.
• Using AGILE tools, plan out and assign to the team design activities related to military engine bearing compartments.
• Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc.), interface with internal and external customers.
• Travel up to 10%.

What You Will Learn:

• Apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.
• Utilize standard work and learn tools to continuously improve the Externals design process.
• Overall design process of parts for engines, including new and existing designs.

Qualifications You Must Have:

• Bachelor's degree in STEM and 8 years of engineering experience; or an Advanced degree with 5 years of engineering experience.
• U.S. Citizen - U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree.
• Active and/or transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance.
• Mechanical design experience within the aerospace or turbofan engine industry.
• Experience with CAD (UG NX, Solidworks, or similar) solid modeling and finite element analysis tools (i.e., ANSYS or similar); Proficiency in use of program/project management tools (i.e., SAP, EVMS, Teamcenter); Understanding of hardware, blueprints, dimensions & tolerances (GD&T), and manufacturing methods.
• Programs and/or project management experience (PMP certification); Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and tools (i.e., LEAN, CORE, ACE, or Six-Sigma); Knowledge of AGILE principles and tools (JIRA or Confluence).

Department/Segment Overview:

• Mechanical Systems, Externals, and Nacelles (MSEN) Engineering is responsible for the design, development and in service support of power transmission systems, bearing compartment and rotor support design and analysis, oil and thermal management systems, engine externals packaging and architecture, as well as nacelles for commercial and military engine models. Technical disciplines include Project Engineering, Mechanical Design, Structural Analysis, Product Definition, System Modeling, Mechanical Design analysis for bearings gears and seals, and fluid-thermal modeling of associated components and systems.

• Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 101,000 USD - 203,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
