Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction from the Structural Steel Painter Superintendent, Directs and Supervises crews of painters engaged in rigging, cleaning, and painting structural steel. Crews may perform painting/coating assignments on structural steel bridges, related structures and facilities and to do other related work. May supervise inspection duties on contracted-out structural steel painting assignments. Must be willing to work non-traditional work schedules to accommodate emergencies, special events, or projects that affect the Region or Caltrans; must be willing to travel throughout the State of California for short periods of time.

For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

The Incumbent may expect to work in all types of weather such as;

• Extreme weather conditions hot and cold

• Heights over 250 feet

• High wind conditions

• Work around moving equipment

• Working around fast moving traffic

• Work inside bridge structures

• Work suspended under bridge structures

• Work in confined spaces

• Work around paint and solvents

• Work around lead base paints

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

• The position requires a drug clearance prior to being hired.
• Possession of a valid and unrestricted Class A driver license with H (Hazardous Materials) and N (Tank Vehicle) endorsements required. (Applicants who do not possess the license will be allowed to compete in the exam, but license must be obtained prior to appointment.)

Ability to work safely at heights of at least 200 feet above ground or water on structural steel bridges and the ability to withstand working continuously under adverse weather conditions (e.g., cold, wet, windy); freedom from lead poisoning as suggested by a blood lead level test; willingness and ability to travel and work short periods of time throughout California; visual and color acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
