JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Chief Nursing Officer and direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, The Emergency Department Technician is responsible for direct and indirect patient care as assigned and within their scope of practice. The EDT performs a variety of tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs to include but not limited to transport, participation in planning, data collection, and recognition of changes and communication to other healthcare team members. The Emergency Department Technician must be knowledgeable of supplies, equipment, and instruments in the Emergency Department and perform all duties in accordance with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. The EDT communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. The position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE - Attends and participates in huddle briefing and reports at the beginning of each shift.
- Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
- Assists doctors and nurses with general patient care, specific treatments, and procedures as needed.
- Prepares wound sites by soaking, cleaning, irrigating, shaving, applying pressure, etc.
- Sponge bathes children with high fever in absence of responsible family members.
- Prepares sterile trays and assists doctors with procedures.
- Applies sterile dressings.
- Obtains blood specimens via phlebotomy procedures.
- Assists with orthopedic procedures, adjust crutches and instruct patients in crutch walking.
- Obtains urine specimens. (Including urinalysis, C&S clean catch).
- Performs urinary bladder catheterization.
- Connects patients to a cardiac monitor.
- Assists in CPR.
- Transports specimens to the lab when the lab is busy, and there is no one coming to the ED to obtain other specimens.
- Assists with the entrance and exit of all non-ambulatory patients.
- Empties any accumulated trash from the treatment room.
- Continuously cleans and prepares rooms for patients by keeping stretchers and exam tables clean and made, keeping floors free of trash, and counters and work area neat and clean.
- Checks and stocks rooms at least once each shift.
- Checks supply cabinets and prepare central supply requisitions to be signed off by the manager.
- The technician is responsible for checking all sterile trays and supplies on the 1st of each month for expiration dates and return these items to central supply for wayward or replacement.
- Stocks linen in each room, each shift, and the linen cabinet as needed. Completes linen request form.
- Prepares charts for patients (under the supervision of the RN) including ER Nursing Flow Sheet, Physician Order Sheet, T-Sheet based on chief complaint, Laboratory Requisitions if indicated, Radiology requisitions if indicated.
- Puts away Central Supply items when delivered.
- Reports any problem to the Nurse in charge on their shift.
- knowledgeable of all department policies and procedures
- May place saline lock.
- May initiate crystalloid solutions that do not have added pharmacological agents. (EMT-1 only).
Requirements
Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion of high school.
Formal Training: Requires documented training on phlebotomy procedures and Glucose testing.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Licensed Emergency Technician preferred, BLS Certification required.
Work Experience: One year of recent experience as an emergency medical technician or two years of recent experience in the medical environment, preferably emergency-related field.
Tools and Equipment Used: Calculator, personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, some medical equipment such as Glucometer. IV pumps (EMT-1 only). They may also apply topical ointment to wounds as directed by the physician.
