SALARY RANGE : $120,000-140,000

Position Summary The Director of Production (DoP) will oversee the planning and execution of a diverse range of live performances, including music, dance, theater, multimedia, and interdisciplinary events across four performance spaces at The Apollo. With an expanding artistic vision, including large-scale theater and opera productions, the DoP position requires a candidate with comprehensive experience in live theater production. The DoP will serve as the primary technical liaison for artists, renters, professional technical personnel, and various departments within The Apollo. The DoP will ensure seamless coordination of technical requirements for all events, maintain high safety standards, uphold production quality, and deliver exceptional artist and audience experiences.The Director of Production oversees internal and external events at the Apollo Theater, managing two distinct business units. For internal events (Programming, Community, Education, Development), they provide comprehensive production supervision, covering technical, staging, staffing, and budgeting aspects. Additionally, they act as the frontline contact for external rental clients, coordinating with diverse road crews to advance dates and fulfill crew needs according to management approval and Union Local 1 guidelines. This role requires adeptness in both full-scale production management and client relations within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.​

Essential Duties

Production Planning & Management:

  • Determine technical requirements based on production riders and contracts.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to clarify production needs and provide cost-effective recommendations.

  • Implement best practices for the Apollo’s production department.

  • Provide labor and equipment estimates.

  • Develop season production calendar, schedules, and implementation plans for internal Apollo and external rental events.

  • Coordinate additional rental equipment procurement as necessary.

Implementation:

  • Oversee preparation and execution of lighting, sound, video, rigging designs, and stage configurations.

  • Supervise and ensure quality work is performed by I.A.T.S.E. Local 1 Stagehands.

  • Ensure proper use of technical equipment and performance facilities.

  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols.

  • Oversee maintenance and repair of technical equipment.

  • Stay updated on technical advancements in theater/entertainment technology.

  • Serve as point of contact for all production needs, addressing unanticipated requirements promptly. Fiscal

  • Develop and administer production department budgets.

  • Maintain records of production-related expenses.

  • Prepare and adhere to annual and event-specific production budgets.

  • Manage inventory, maintenance, and procurement of technical supplies and equipment. Staff

Staff Development:

  • Recruit, onboard, and supervise I.A.T.S.E. Local 1 Stagehands.

  • Collaborate with the Apollo Education Department to develop internship programs.

    Skills and Qualifications
  • 8-10 years of experience in theater production and entertainment technology, staying updated on the latest advancements in lighting, sound, video, rigging, carpentry, and stagecraft.

  • Proficient in sound reinforcement, with the ability to discern sound quality, and skilled in lighting design, distinguishing quality lighting.

  • Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, employing a diplomatic approach with both artists and staff.

  • Capable of working autonomously or collaboratively, taking initiative as appropriate.

  • Knowledgeable about theater policies, safety standards, and regulations.

  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Committed to diversity and serving a wide range of populations.

    Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Production Manager or Production Lead (Technical Lead) at a major theatrical venue.

    Advanced knowledge of technical backstage operations, ETCP certifications preferred.

  • Proficiency in scenery construction, rigging, and theatrical lighting techniques.

  • Demonstrated project management skills.

  • Knowledge of dance, theater, opera and music.

  • Flexibility and willingness to assist as needed in a fast-paced environment.
