This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of three thousand five hundred dollars ($3500.00) upon completion of the probationary period. The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant.

Incumbents in this position provide custodial care and control of detainees within a City detention facility.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises inmate population while inmates are engaged in activities including meals, showers, visits, receiving medical care, program services, laundry, daily housekeeping functions, etc. This includes the distribution of institutional clothes, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies including caustic/flammable substances, tools, and equipment to inmates.
  • Provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates, squatting and bending to perform "pat" and "strip" searches of inmates, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive, inmates and transferring and transporting inmates by walking or riding in cars and vans. Also, conduct shakedowns of inmate housing unit areas involving squatting, bending, stooping, and kneeling while searching cells and common areas, inmates' personal belongings, bedding, clothing, etc., for dangerous or nuisance contraband items.
  • Maintains simple records, log books, etc. and completes routine reports. Conducts accurate counts of inmates housed in the institution as prescribed by policy.
  • Monitors housing unit areas requiring regular and continuous walking throughout the housing unit, including climbing the stairs several times per hour to monitor inmates housed on upper levels. Making rounds of housing unit areas to assess the well-being of inmates and to ensure their safety. Monitors "at risk" or suicidal inmates on a regular basis to ensure their safety.
  • Patrols inmate area to ensure safety and security. This includes securing doors, gates, and windows, monitoring inmate movement through the facility, escorting civilians through facility for authorized purpose and monitoring visitors and/or work crews working in the housing units.
  • Operate security equipment such as handcuffs, two-way radios, locking devices, automated control doors, closed circuit camera monitoring systems, touch screens and the facility management computer system.
  • Observes inmate behavior to ensure an orderly and safe environment and takes appropriate action when an inmate's behavior jeopardizes the orderly operations of the facility. This may include the use of chemical agents and firearms, as well as employing appropriate physical force, including deadly force if required, to control altercations between inmates or to protect inmates, civilians, and co-workers.
  • Respond to emergencies, including climbing stairs and ladders while searching for escaped inmates, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious inmate or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs or ladders.

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor detainees, in favor of a desired outcome.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicle, restraint devices, nightstick, handgun, two-way radio, computer terminal, locks/keys, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, activity logs, incident reports, medication records, repair forms, visitor's log, policies, procedures and general operating manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such irate individuals, intimidation, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
  • Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift objects up to fifty (50) pounds such as supplies, and push and pull objects up to one hundred (100) pounds such as supply carts. May require the ability to sustain sufficient physical force to restrain or subdue detainees. Requires the ability to stoop, crouch, balance, climb, bend, twist and run in performing a variety of corrections duties.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks to recognize objects clearly to observe detainees and sounds and odors to detect irregularities in security and detect contraband.
Other Requirements:

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Work involves shift, weekend, holiday and mandatory overtime assignments.
  • Shift differential is paid for evening, night and weekend shifts.
Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate; plus 6-months of work experience. (15 earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for the 6-month work experience requirement).

AGE : Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the time of submitting the Employment Application.

In order to be considered for this position applicants must be available to work all shifts which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and to work at the assigned City Correctional institution. When necessary, Correctional Officers must be able to work mandatory overtime. Candidates must provide their availability for shift and weekend assignments on the Availability Section of the Employment Application.

Correctional Officers must be able to pass classroom curriculum while in training. CPR and first aid training is required after hiring.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points

City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
