The Opportunity

The SOC Investment Group is the shareholder advocacy arm of the Strategic Organizing Center. We are seeking a Corporate Accountability Research Analyst. You will work with a team to help organize and support investor engagement with publicly traded corporations. Youll research and support corporate governance initiatives that protect worker retirement fund beneficiaries' economic interests in the financial markets. This role contributes to creating an effective voice for corporate accountability by analyzing performance data, evaluating social and governance risk, and supporting shareholder engagement activities.

The Work

Research and Analysis (40%)

  • Conduct comprehensive sustainability, governance, and investment research and analysis utilizing online resources, company filings, and subscription-based databases
  • Analyze data on industries, companies, individual executives, and federal and state policies
  • Prepare detailed research reports and data summaries to support shareholder engagement strategies

Communications and Content Development (25%)

  • Draft public statements, letters, and presentations for external stakeholders
  • Support the teams social media presence and digital communications
  • Create compelling content that communicates complex financial and governance concepts to diverse audiences

Stakeholder Engagement and Representation (25%)

  • Collaborate with pension fund trustees and staff, institutional shareholders, and the broader investment community
  • Represent the team in internal and external forums, including shareholder meetings, Congressional hearings, and industry conferences
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the corporate governance and investment space

Administrative and Support Functions (10%)

  • Perform additional duties as required to support the teams operations
  • Assist with project management and coordination of multiple initiatives
  • Support senior staff with various research and administrative tasks

Qualifications & Skills :

  • Excellent writing, political, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to conduct thorough research to identify material risks at specific companies or industries
  • Ability to think critically and analytically and use sound judgment
  • Ability to present complex issues to a variety of audiences, both investor and non-investor
  • Good computer skills, including key Office 365 programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), Zoom, and on-line information sources, such as EDGAR
  • Interested in learning and developing new skills and a willingness to ask questions
  • Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills
  • A strong commitment to social justice

Desired

  • Previous work, volunteer, or internship experience in labor organizations, financial services, public interest organizations, or government agencies
  • Experience in advocacy work in the financial sector
  • Familiarity with sustainable investment principles and corporate governance best practices
  • Power BI or other data visualization software experience
  • Knowledge of federal securities regulations and corporate governance frameworks
  • Knowledge of financial, legal, and investor research platforms, including Capital IQ, Diligent, ISS Voting Analytics, PACER, and Lexus Nexus
  • Working knowledge of SharePoint, Power BI, and basic design programs, such as Canva
  • Experience with webinar production and logistics, particularly on Zoom

Minimum Required Education And Experience

  • BA or BS required in economics, business, finance, labor relations, legal or related fields
  • Minimum of 1 2 of relevant professional, internship, or volunteer experience with labor, financial, public interest, or governmental organizations with a preference towards experience researching social, or corporate governance risks at publicly traded companies

Physical Demands & Working Environment

  • The Shareholder Advocacy and Corporate Engagement Specialist is expected to spend at least two days per week in-office at our Washington, DC location and may work remotely otherwise.
  • Willingness to travel, occasionally work long and irregular hours for conferences and to attend corporate annual meetings, particularly in the Spring and Fall.

Compensation

Salary is calculated based on years of experience, with annual increases according to an established salary scale. The salary range for this position is $69,909 - $77,509 . This is a full-time exempt position.
