Job Description Under immediate supervision, in various City agencies, performs common unskilled laboring work requiring physical strength. The duties and responsibilities of a City Laborer are all geared toward maintaining a clean, safe and efficient work site while also supporting the overall project.
- Cleaning and preparing project work sites.
- Loading and unloading materials and equipment.
- May assist in the building and taking down scaffolding and temporary structures if requested.
- Operating and tending machinery and heavy equipment.
- Following instructions from supervisors.
- Assists in relocating building equipment as directed.
- Clean up of demolition sites including sweeping and light mopping as assigned.
- Assisting skilled tradespeople in their duties relative to assigned project work.
- Some of the physical activities performed by City Laborers (NYC Health+ Hospitals) and environmental conditions experienced are: climbing stairs and ladders up to 50 feet above the ground; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 80 pounds; using power driven and regular hand tools; bending; crouching and kneeling; working in confined spaces; working outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions (including assisting with snow/ice removal); and working in patient rooms and other infection control environments, including isolation rooms and operating rooms.
- If required - Proficiently and safely use snow removal equipment such as shovels, plows, snow blowers, bobcats, vehicles with plow blades, and other power and manually operated tools and equipment used to perform snow removal.
- If required - Safely and appropriately distribute de-icing solutions, including calcium chloride or rock salt.
- It is required to remove snow as part of the Snow Team, you are required to have cold weather gear and wear it appropriately to protect themselves against adverse weather conditions.
- Work as part of a team and take direction from supervisor or Snow Team Leader.
Minimum Qualifications 1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position.
2. Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of New York.
3. There are certain medical and physical requirements.
Department Preferences Must be able to lift at least 80 pounds
