Job Summary:

Position Description

The Geospatial Information Sciences Program at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geospatial Information Sciences, with a specialization in Sustainability. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative scholar who will contribute to our GIS program and advance our commitment to sustainability through both research and teaching.

The successful candidate will be able to conduct high-impact research that integrates GIS with sustainability, addressing critical environmental and social challenges including, but not limited to, climate change and clean technology, smart city and social innovation, environmental monitoring and data science, urban resilience and environmental justice, sustainable development and transportation, and sustainable public health. The candidate will be expected to teach and develop courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in GIS , spatial analysis, and sustainability, which may include introductory and advanced GIS , environmental modeling, sustainable urban planning, spatial quantitative methods, and related subjects. Interests in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and promoting community-engaged research and teaching would be an advantage.

The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD or equivalent in GIScience, geography, urban planning, regional science, environmental and ecological informatics or a closely related field is required prior to appointment. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Education and Experience: Experience with advanced GIS technologies, such as spatial data science, machine learning, and AI would be preferred. A demonstrated ability to secure external funding for research activities is also preferred.

The Program and School

The Geospatial Information Sciences program at The University of Texas at Dallas is a nationally recognized program offering Bachelor, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees, as well as several Graduate Certificates. With world-renowned faculty specialized in spatial statistics, spatiotemporal analysis, remote sensing, and geocomputation, it is designated as one institution of the Esri Innovation Program and one of 20 USGIF Accredited Academic Programs of the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. The School of Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences, which houses the Geospatial Information Sciences Program, has a long tradition of fostering interdisciplinary research. The University is located in the suburban north of the DFW Metroplex amid one of the largest and most vibrant high-technology concentrations in the nation.
